How is Fentanyl Nasal Spray dosed?

For cancer pain in adults, the initial dose is 100 micrograms (mcg) or 1 spray in one nostril during an episode of breakthrough cancer pain. The dose may be increased up to a maximum of 800 mcg or 1 spray containing 400 mcg of fentanyl in each nostril. Do not use more than 4 doses per 24 hours. Wait at least 2 hours before treating another episode of breakthrough cancer pain. If pain relief is not achieved within 30 minutes, consult your doctor for further instructions. Dosing for children should be determined by a doctor.

  4. Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  5. Pancreatitis (inflammation or swelling of the pancreas), acute
  6. Kidney disease
  7. Liver disease
  8. Lung or breathing problems, severe (e.g., bronchial asthma, respiratory depression)
  9. Stomach or bowel blockage (including paralytic ileus), known or suspected Consult your doctor before using Fentanyl Nasal Spray if you have any of these medical conditions or are taking any of these medications.

How is Fentanyl Nasal Spray administered?

Fentanyl Nasal Spray is administered through the nose as a spray. It should never be used on the eyes or skin. Follow the instructions provided by your doctor and read the Medication Guide that comes with the medicine. Do not substitute or convert to other fentanyl products. Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it out of the reach of children.
