What is the dosage form of Nalmefene Nasal Spray?
Nalmefene is available in nasal spray form. It is used to reverse opioid overdose. The recommended dosage for adults and children over 12 years old is 2.7 mg (1 spray into one nostril). Additional sprays may be given into the other nostril every 2 to 5 minutes until the patient responds or emergency medical assistance is available. For children under 12 years old, the dose should be determined by a doctor. The nasal spray should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light, and kept out of reach of children.
How is Nalmefene Nasal Spray administered?
To administer nalmefene nasal spray:
- Remove the nasal spray from the box and open it.
- Lay the patient on their back with their neck supported.
- Gently insert the nozzle into one nostril until your fingers on either side of the nozzle are against the bottom of the patient's nose.
- Press the plunger firmly to administer the dose. Remove the nasal spray from the patient's nostril after giving the dose.
- Place the patient in the recovery position and seek emergency medical help immediately. The recommended dosage for adults and children 12 years of age and older is 2.7 milligrams (1 spray into one nostril). Additional doses may be given into the other nostril every 2 to 5 minutes until the patient responds or until emergency medical assistance becomes available.
