How is Sumatriptan Nasal Route dosed?

For migraine headaches, adults should use 22 milligrams (mg) (1 nosepiece in each nostril, total of 2 nosepieces) per day. Another dose (22 mg) may be used if needed, as long as it has been at least 2 hours since the last spray. The total dose should not exceed 44 mg (4 nosepieces) in a 24-hour period (one day).

What medications are contraindication with Sumatriptan Nasal Route?

Sumatriptan nasal route is contraindicated with medicines used to treat depression, such as citalopram, duloxetine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, olanzapine, paroxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine, Celexa, Cymbalta, Effexor, Lexapro, Luvox, Paxi, Prozac, Sarafem, Symbyax, or Zoloft, as it may cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Always consult your doctor and inform them of all the medications you are currently using to avoid any contraindications or adverse interactions.

How is Sumatriptan Nasal Route administered?

Sumatriptan nasal route is administered using a breath-powered delivery device called Xsail. The medicine comes in a disposable nosepiece and a reusable delivery device. To use the nasal powder:

  1. Remove the disposable nosepiece from its foil pouch.
  2. Remove the clear device cap from the reusable delivery device and click the nosepiece into the device body.
  3. Fully press and release the white piercing button on the device body to pierce the capsule inside the nosepiece.
  4. Insert the nosepiece into the nostril so that it makes a tight seal.
  5. Rotate the device and insert the mouthpiece between the lips.
  6. Blow forcefully through the mouthpiece to deliver the medicine into the nasal cavity.
  7. Press the clear tab to remove the first nosepiece and throw it in the trash can. Repeat the steps using a second nosepiece into the other nostril to complete the recommended dose.

To use the nasal spray:

  1. Gently blow your nose to clear the nostrils before using the medicine.
  2. Gently press one nostril to close it.
  3. Hold the device upright between your thumb and first 2 fingers.
  4. Insert half of the spray nozzle into the open nostril and angle outward.
  5. Tilt your head back slightly.
  6. Firmly press the plunger all the way up as you slowly breathe through your nose.
  7. Remove the device from your nostril and keep your head upright.
  8. Gently breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. Repeat this for 10 to 20 seconds.
  9. You may feel liquid in your nose or at the back of your throat.
  10. Do not look down as this may cause the medicine to drip from your nose.

What are common precautions when taking Sumatriptan Nasal Route?

Common precautions when taking sumatriptan nasal route include:

  1. Use with caution if you have bleeding problems or CNS disorders, eye or vision problems, kidney disease, liver disease, seizures or epilepsy (history of). Sumatriptan may make these conditions worse.
  2. Use with caution if you have coronary artery disease (family history of), diabetes, hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol in the blood), hypertension (high blood pressure), controlled, obesity, or Raynaud's syndrome. You may be at increased risk for certain side effects.
  3. Use only as directed by your doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Using too much sumatriptan may increase the chance of side effects.
  4. Use this medicine only in the nose. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. If it gets on these areas, rinse it off right away.
  5. Do not use this medicine for a headache that is different from your usual migraines. Check with your doctor instead.
  6.
